Smoky quartz is a variety of quartz.  The color can vary from brown to almost black to smoky gray. Natural smoky quartz often occurs in granitic rocks which have a small but persistent amount of radioactivity. Durable, It’s a 7 on the Mohs scale for hardness.
It is thought to be a very protective and grounding stone, bringing physical and psychic protection. Also an excellent stone for protection from negative energy, as it removes negativity of any kind and transforms it to positive energy.

Smoky quartz is a grey, translucent variety of quartz. It ranges in clarity from almost complete transparency to a brownish-gray crystal that is almost opaque.It comes in every shade of brown, from a light tan to nearly black. 

Sunglasses with flat, thin panes of smoky quartz, were used in China in the 12th century., worn by Chinese judges to hide their facial expressions during court proceedings! In Scotland, smoky quartz from the Cairngorm mountain range in the Scottish Highlands was used in jewelry and the stones accordingly were called Cairngorms. 

Smoky Quartz is  for the zodiac signs of Scorpio and Capricorn. It is said to be a powerful grounding gemstone.

The Lore of Smoky Quartz

Smoky quartz has been revered since antiquity as a stone of grounding, clarity, and release. The ancient Celts prized it as a sacred stone of the earth, using it in talismans and ceremonial objects. In Scottish Highland tradition, large smoky quartz crystals were set into the handles of ceremonial daggers — the stone was believed to channel the power of the dark gods of the earth.
