The compact form makes the phantom effect especially concentrated. Rotate it slowly and the ghost-like echo of the crystal's earlier form appears and vanishes, the inclusions catching light from different angles.
Phantom quartz forms when mineral impurities accumulate at the tip of a growing crystal, then get sealed inside as growth resumes.
