Petrified wood forms when ancient trees are rapidly buried by sediment or volcanic ash in river systems, cutting off oxygen and halting decay. Over millions of years, minerals including silica dissolved from volcanic ash absorb into the porous wood and crystallize within the cellular structure, completely replacing organic matter with stone while preserving the tree's original form.
