Herkimer Diamonds form slowly and are not anchored to a base formation; they float freely in solutions of dolomite cavities. Because the Herkimer Diamonds are free floating and not connected to a base, they are able to form double pointed terminals at both ends.

Over 200 million years ago, the logs washed into an ancient river system and were rapidly buried deep enough by sediment and debris also carried in the water. Oxygen was cut off and decay slowed to a process that would now take centuries. Minerals, including silica dissolved from volcanic ash, absorbed into the porous wood over thousands of years crystallized within the cellular structure, replacing organic matter over time.

Iron Rose Hematite is a variety of Hematite. Iron Rose Hematite is a term used to describe rounded tabular crystals. In these formations, the arrangement of the crystals looks much like a roses' petals. The overall appearance might seem sculpted, but these Hematite crystals are natural. Excellent metallic luster. 

Hematite can be reddish brown, dark silvery-grey scaled masses, silvery-grey to black crystals, and dark-grey masses, to name a few. What they all have in common is a rust-red streak.

Hematite was named about 300-325 BCE by Theophrastus from Greek, for blood stone. Translated in 79 by Pliny the Elder to haematites, "bloodlike", in allusion to the vivid red colour of the powder. Hematite can be reddish brown, dark silvery-grey scaled masses, silvery-grey to black crystals, and dark-grey masses, to name a few. What they all have in common is a rust-red streak.

Hematite has been used in burials in Neolithic cultures, where bones have been, colored with red ochre (Hematite), and reburied. Ancient Greeks associated iron with the god Aries (Mars in the Roman pantheon), the god of war, and soldiers rubbed Hematite over their bodies before battle to make them invulnerable, but hematite powder would have also colored their skin red, and so used to frighten their enemies.
