Material & Craftsmanship

Handcrafted from Arizona petrified wood, this piece displays rich reds, golden yellows, warm umbers, and charcoal tones. Each color tells the story of different minerals absorbed over millions of years during the fossilization process.

Petrified wood forms when ancient trees are rapidly buried by sediment or volcanic ash, cutting off oxygen and preserving the wood structure. Over eons, minerals like silica dissolve into the porous wood and crystallize within the cellular structure, completely replacing organic matter with stone while maintaining the tree's original form.

The Science of Color

The vibrant hues in petrified wood come from trace minerals present during fossilization:

• Red & Rust: Iron oxide (hematite)
• Yellow, Brown & Orange: Goethite and hydrated iron oxide
• White & Cream: Pure silica
• Black: Organic carbon or pyrite
• Blue: Chalcedony, chrysocolla, cobalt

Petrified wood is made up of almost solid quartz. The colors are produced by impurities in the quartz, such as iron, carbon, and manganese. Over 200 million years ago, the logs washed into an ancient river system and were rapidly buried deep enough by sediment and debris also carried in the water. Oxygen was cut off and decay slowed to a process that would take centuries. Minerals, including silica dissolved from volcanic ash, absorbed into the porous wood over thousands of years crystallized within the cellular structure, replacing organic matter over time.
