Larimar Rare Blue Gem
Deep in the volcanic mountains of the Dominican Republic's Barahona province lies the world's only source of Larimar. This extraordinary geological formation, first discovered in the 1970s, yields precious few quality gemstones each year—a scarcity that has made Larimar a sought-after gem.
Larimar is a type of pectolite, or a rock composed largely of pectolite, an acid silicate hydrate of calcium and sodium. Although pectolite is found in many locations, none have the unique volcanic blue coloration of larimar. The blue color of Larimar, distinct from that of other pectolites, is the result of copper substitution for calcium.
