Hanyewi — the Lakota word for Moon — is the right name for this piece. Deep green move through the stone like the sky at midnight, broken by patches of aqua blue that catch the light and hold it. Look closely and you’ll find small iridescent flashes scattered across the surface, shifting with every angle like moonlight on water. It is a stone that changes as you look at it.

Fluorite takes its name from the Latin fluere, meaning to flow — a reference to its early use as a flux in metalworking. It has since been called "the most colorful mineral in the world," and this piece earns that title: deep purple, apple green, white, and iridescent shimmer, all within a single hand-carved form. The color zoning follows the natural geometry of the crystal’s growth, meaning every band and patch is exactly as the stone formed it — no treatment, no enhancement.

The buffalo carved from it carries its own ancient language. In Lakota, the word for buffalo is Tatanka — but to native speakers, the literal translation is something closer to "He who owns us." Not a creature possessed, but one that possessed the land and the lives of those who lived alongside it. The buffalo signifies endurance and emotional courage — qualities that feel at home in a stone named for the moon.

Which allowed me to wear them on vacation! I loved so many things they have that it was very hard to narrow my purchases down!
