Kestrels, lithograph on paper by Riccardo Capraro
Over 1000 hours of work has gone into this compositon, literally weeks of detail drawings and sketches are needed before painting begins.
Riccardo was inspired by this family of Kestrels that nested in his 100+ year old barn loft. One of the fledglings fell from the nest before it was able to fly and the parents took great care to feed and care for it. This gave Riccardo the unique opportunity to really study this family closely and he took full advantage. Many hours were spent sketching and observing the parents as the cared for the young bird.
In this painting the father is perched highest and the two young birds are seen below him. Riccardo has spared no detail, down to the lichen and perfectly portrayed pine cones.
Gouacheˈ(ɡwaʃ), derives from the Italian guazzo, water paint, splash or bodycolor (the term preferred by art historians) is a type of paint consisting of pigment suspended in water. Gouache differs from watercolor in that the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much higher, and an additional, inert, white pigment such as chalk is also present.
