The stone is marked with bands of concentric striping in contrasting shades of green, from pale to almost black, and shows intricate patterns on its polished surface.
The stone's name is from the Greek word for "mallow", a green herb. It was used as a mineral pigment in green paints (Malachite pigment is found in the paintings of Egyptian tombs) eye shadows, and adornment. Malachite is extensively mined at King Solomon's Mines.
Russian czars used Malachite for ornaments and paneling for their castles, and intricate inlay work. 3.5 to 4 Moh’s hardness.
It is a Stone of Transformation, said to be helpful in assisting one in changing situations and providing for spiritual growth.
